Preetha Kannan – b.1959
Today in the 21st century, when representation of Nature in art is a fairly rare phenomenon, there has emerged the passionate voice of Preetha Kannan who dares to paint Nature, particularly trees, as her metaphorical expression. Reverting to the ‘passé’ subject of Nature posed a great artistic challenge for Preetha to contemporaries her vision. She chose a technique and style, which, though traditional and premised on the academic realism of the great traditional masters, used the powers of the computer to provide references both for the textures derived from the phenomenon of pixilation in digital technology and the potentially infinite combinations of colour. This is translated by her, through the traditional medium of acrylic on canvas, as dots of varying tonalities and shades creating hyper reality or super realism. The result is a highly original and fecund celebration of colour and texture that is rare in contemporary art.
