CRITICISM The Scenery of Wonderland by Nanjo Fumio
Part 1
Looking at Haru K’s work for the first time, I was amazed that such a world could exist. His work is reminiscent of a bird’s-eye view of another planet that was created through a peculiar kind of imagination. It is a marvel that he continues to spawn these worlds of reverie one after another. His paintings particularly interested me in the aspects below. My first concern is related to the fact that food is the subject matter of these paintings. The second is the question of what is being added by Haru K’s work to the traditions of landscape painting. The third point is what the metaphor of a world constructed out of miniatures signifies.
In the Delicious Landscape series, assorted foodstuffs create tiny landscapes. The mountains and streams, plants and trees looking like miniature models are represented as if they were food being served on a plate, toppings for a bowl of rice, or side dishes in a lunch box.
