CRITICISM

Part 2

Each landscape is constructed extraordinarily in its density. All the depicted elements elaborately fitting into a small lunch box actually seem cute in a way.

The fact that food is the major subject matter in basically every work by Haru K is noteworthy. There have been a great number of depictions of food across the history of painting. Haru K’s food paintings, however, seem to fundamentally differ from its precedents. His interest does not lie in the naturalistic representation of food, but in using food to build an authentic but surrealistic world that has never been seen before.

When the subject matter is food, it means that the subject is familiar but perishable, or at least very fragile. Food items by their nature have a close relationship with daily life. This feature of being part of daily life can be linked to the topics of Pop Art. In this regard, I could say that one of the wings supporting Haru K’s work is borrowed from Pop Art.
