Fabric I used for this artwork is taken from four different vintage kimonos, and is framed in wood taken from antique chest-of-drawers in which these kimonos have been closed for decades.
This set features four different festive black kimono (kuro-tomesode), united by the same pattern - pines. You can see that the seasons are different on all canvases - from the left autumn, summer, winter, and spring. The collage is designed so that four of them together create a fluid harmonious form.
The pine tree pattern is elegantly highlighted with hand-dyed gold accents and traditional Japanese embroidery technique.
The frame is created from antique kiritansu wood.
Kiritansu - chest-of-drawers for kimono, is traditionally made from paulownia wood, a uniquely Japanese material closely tied to the world of kimonos.
I use antique kiritansu that can’t be used as furniture anymore to create basis and frames for my works. It adds them even more authentic atmosphere of traditional wabisabi spirit.
