This artwork uses antique kimono fabric, embroidery application taken from antique obi sash, traditional Japanese golden leafing technique and pine tree - wood significant for Japanese culture, for frame.
The sun motif in Japanese traditional culture symbolizes divine power, vitality, and prosperity. It represents light, order, and imperial lineage. The rising sun (旭日, kyokujitsu) is a national emblem, signifying hope and renewal, while sun imagery frequently appears in art, textiles, and family crests (kamon).
The traditional Japanese gold leafing technique is called kinpaku (金箔). Originating from Kyoto, this technique involves meticulously hammering gold into extremely thin sheets, which are then applied to surfaces like wood, paper, ceramics, and textiles. Kinpaku is commonly used in temple decorations, folding screens (byōbu), lacquerware (maki-e), and Noh masks, creating a luxurious and timeless aesthetic. I used it here to depict sunlight.
