Nagoya Geisha Shachihoko Pose

JCAT NY | Stand : DA05

I created a cute, pop-style illustration of a geisha, a traditional Japanese performer who started during the Edo period.

Geishas entertain guests at banquets by singing, dancing, and performing various arts.

In Nagoya, there is a unique pose called the "shachihoko." Inspired by the golden shachihoko on the castle, this pose involves arching the body in a way similar to the shachihoko, and it is a distinctive feature of Nagoya’s geisha performances. Although I’m not sure why this pose exists, the geisha is depicted with a determined expression as she performs with effort and dedication. I have never seen a real one, but I imagine it must be a lucky gesture.

The kimono features chrysanthemums, which symbolize longevity, good health, protection from evil, mental stability, nobility, and elegance in traditional Japanese patterns.
