On January 1, 2024, a devastating earthquake struck the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan—my hometown.
I was there visiting my family when the disaster occurred.
Noto’s nature has long provided both abundance and hardship.
At times, it gently embraces and nurtures; at others, it teaches the harshness of reality—much like a mother.
The title "Hahaso" (柞) carries the meaning of "mother" in classical Japanese poetry.
Noto is home to many artisans who have carefully preserved traditional crafts and techniques for generations.
This artwork reflects the deep blue of the Sea of Japan, the rich greenery, and the pure waters of the region.
It also embodies the essence of Noto’s renowned traditional craftsmanship.
